We will be finishing up our electricity unit tomorrow. If you have any empty paper towel rolls, please send them in tomorrow so we can make flashlights. Our reading story for this week is "Eye of the Storm." It is a very interesting story about a storm chaser. Your child has several books online to read. They can work on these at home throughout the week. In English we will be working on identifying present, past, and future tense verbs. The spelling words for the week are compound words (Unit 3, Week 4).
The holiday break is quickly approaching. Students are in school next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. All three are full days. However, if you are planning on leaving town for the holidays early please send in a note so your child's absence will be excused. We WILL NOT have a reading story or spelling test next week. Most of the week will be spent reviewing and catching up on incomplete work. Our holiday party will be Monday afternoon. Please look for a note home about this on Wednesday.

Today was an excellent day in the classroom. The students were introduced to a new website. They had an amazing time playing on http://www.mathplayground.com/. A few students figured out how to enter the multi-player rooms and soon the entire class was racing jet skis. Ask your child to show you this amazing site. Our reading story for the week is "The Stranger." Please make sure your child is reading it each night. We have started a unit on verbs in English. In Social Studies we are still talking about government. We will pick up science right after Thanksgiving with a unit on electricity.
Don't forget: Tomorrow is Thanksgiving lunch. We eat at 11:00 and invite each of you to come eat with us.
If your child is going to miss the Monday & Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving, please send in a note some time this week so the absence will be excused.

Thanks to all the parents who showed up for our play this morning. I hope you enjoyed seeing what your child is working on in class. This week our reading story is "Marven of the Great North Woods." We are studying singular possessive nouns in English and are continuing to work on multiplication in math. This week we will start multiplying by 2 digits so your child might need help with math homework. We will be starting a new unit in science on electricity. It is my hope the AMSTI kit containing the hands-on materials will arrive soon.

Next week is a review week for reading, spelling, and English. Instead of a reading story, each student checked out an AR book on their level and must read it and take a test by next Friday, September 24th. I have a list with the name of the book each child checked out. If you would like to know what book your child is supposed to be reading, feel free to email me, jmichael@hsv.k12.al.us. In English we will be reviewing all the skills taught so far this year. These include declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences, subjects and predicate, and simple and compound sentences. For spelling, your child will have 25 words. The words are all the challenge words for weeks 1-5. These are listed on Spelling City under Unit 1 Review. I will also give the students a printed list on Monday. Finally, we started a new unit in math yesterday. We will be working on graphing for the next couple of weeks. Students need to know how to read graphs and also how to draw bar and line graphs.

Today we had art for the first time. We also previewed several shows we will be using this year in our learning. We watched Mya and Miguel, Wishbone, and Cyberchase. We started learning some new words in English. A declarative sentence is a statement and an interrogative sentence is a question. We also continued to learn the correct way to complete the Daily Edit. In math we continued to work on addition with larger numbers.

Important Web Sites
We will be using several web sites frequently this year. I am going to introduce some of them here.
http://www.spellingcity.com/jlmichael/
Students can use this site to practice their spelling words each week. Each list is there by Unit and Week. Students can play games and take practice tests.
https://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/snpapp/login/login.jsp
Students will be using this site to take their reading tests this year. As a parent, you can check your students scores and see what areas your child needs to work on. I will also be assigning books each week that students need to listen to or read. Students can read these books at home as well as at school.
http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/home.jsp
You can use this site to order from Scholastic book orders instead of having to send in a check. You place your order and pay with a credit card and the books are delivered to the classroom. I will send home information about how to use this feature.
http://www.firstinmath.com/
Students will be using this site as frequently as possible to help increase their math skills. I plan on students being able to use the site at least 3-5 times a week at school. Students can also log in and work at home. The $8 math fee was used to purchase your child's subscription to this site.

Welcome!!
Welcome to my classroom blog. I will use this site to post classroom information. This will also be a place where parents and students can ask questions about homework or upcoming classroom events. I will also be posting links to web sites that can help your child. Please check here often. I will check this site at least twice an evening to answer any questions that might come up. I hope this will be a great way for us to communicate throughout the school year.
